Walking down past the old cabins, a usual path to the local rookery, I heard some commotion from behind.
A large bird flew fast, low and close past me. He was followed just as fast by a Red-shoulder. Both went down into thick brush. There was no fuss after that so no disagreements or quick meal happened.
As I moved on a Red-shoulder flew into a tree looking over the cabin vegetable gardens. Likely the same bird as before (there are a few right here though).
No clear open shot, but I stumbled around under the tree. He stayed put, I found a few holes in the branches, grabbed what I could.

I met Ellen later here and she came down the same route, no Hawks. I think a pair have started a nest by the gardens but no proof yet.
Nice hawk shots. We have a pair that hunts our woods pretty regularly, but dont get to see them perch much.
Thanks. Like you behind our house we see them in passing. The local swamps have pairs nesting every year. Plenty of food for them. Strangely I think there are pairs within the same hunting territory.
A pair’s range is typically a rough circle only 1.2km across, so there is likely room for several pairs in the region?

Good to know, thanks. There seems to be at least two pairs in an area half that size. Which is surprising since there is miles of swamp and marsh. Makes me wonder how many are just around the rookery.
