The Start Of Nesting 2026

None of these are particularly good, normally they don’t get published.

However, they are the first real sign this swamp rookery might be active this year. Last year was slow for the Great Blue Herons.

The nests all appear to be left over from previous years. There is another area in the swamp that has never had Great Blues nest and they are moving sticks in now. That’s exactly what is needed. The old rookery has lost Cypress Trees, branches are missing, and it’s just old.

    1. There could be some nesting in Cypress next month. However a cold snap stops them dead on their tracks until it gets warm again. For Great Blues your best shot in SC is probably Magnolia Plantation back swamp outside Charleston.

    1. Certainly is 😃😃. Even if it’s a few the fact they moved into a second part of this swamp great. There was another very active small wading bird rookery just down a trail from here, one year there was nothing 🥹. I’ll take this as a win.

  1. We have a few GBH’s pairing up and gathering sticks here, as well. The unseasonable warmth may have triggered them. That’s over for the next 3 weeks at least, so it will be interesting to see whether they lose interest, or keep going.
