They are faster than they look.
A Great Blue Heron can have a wing span of about 6 1/2 feet. That pushes a lot of air, a few lazy wing beats and they are at full speed. A cruising speed of 38 mph (48 kn/h).
I try to keep that in mind when I only manage a few quick shots as they pass.
