This Heron, when returning to a nest, made a circle and approched from the same direction most of the time.  I see them do this often.

They may need to avoid branches, catch a breeze, even go around another birds nesting spot.

That sounds great for picking the right spot to wait for a photograph. It can be. Just as often the bird I am following leaves for a trip to the river and never returns.
