Up To The Nest, Heron

Up To The Nest, Heron

For Herons the nest can be built at any height, it’s all about the branches making up a wide enough base.

This year there are many more nests high up compared to low Cypress trees used in the past.

The far colors of the swamp made for a nice background this year.

These birds return each year so I’ve wondered if the larger number of Great Egrets have pushed them away from typical nest spots.

  1. I don’t understand. If the GBH establish their nests prior to Great Egrets, how do Great Egrets impact GBH nest-site choice?

    1. They overlap towards the end of Herons and start of Egrets. The Egrets come in larger flocks, harass the bigger birds, and in some case kill the young Heron chicks. Eventually each year less Herons come and more Egrets show up.
