If you watch these smaller herons fish it’s real clear they work very hard, for little reward.


Their preferred meal appears to be small minnows. They must catch a large number to get a enough to eat.

They can catch larger prey hunting in the reeds and tall grass. However they keep going back to the shallows for fish.

Little Blue Heron.
Seems like a lot of work to get those minnows – you’d think a juicy big tadpole or frog would be a better route.
I know, and yet that’s their primary diet…small stuff.
