This Wood Stork was digging down under pretty deep. Storks don’t like water this deep.

He must have known there were plenty of fish down there. He stayed, caught a few, and never tried for the shallows.

Food is the driving force. He landed too close and looked right at me as he ate. He won and we moved off.
A great catch (for the stork) and you! That is one proud stork, by the look of things 🤗
😆, that’s what I was thinking.
Terrific close up shots! That’s quite a look he’s giving you 😊
Yeah, he was close. Almost always they keep a big distance. However, in this location they come in close to catch fish. Egrets and Heron were doing the same thing.
I don’t know this bird at all & am intrigued by its bald scaly neck, like a vulture’s head. Assume it’s because it fishes so feathers remain dry? And the beak is amazing. Is it native to your area?
I’m not sure why they have a bald head, other storks don’t. Wood Storks are tropical birds. They are (were) from South and Central America as well as Florida. Over the last years they moved up into the South Carolina Lowcountry.
