The Great Blue here came up from behind me. He had gone for sticks, actually landing on the same trail as me. For these shots I waited on the swamps edge to track his flight when he returned.

He passed in front of me climbing upwards to the nest tree. This should be a straight forward series of photos. In this case it was, and yet often the bird shifts just enough in flight for me to miss. Big surprise 😂.

Great Blue Herons in a rookery.
Hey Ted ! just out of curiosity, were they all taken with the Leica 100-400mm ? And do you wait for them somewhere for a while, or is this just during a walk ? Stunning shots – really !
All with the Leica 😊 and OM-1. I’ve completely moved over. As for position in this rookery…
The nesting trees are in the water, a swamp pond. There are trails around 3/4’s of the pond. Depending on the action we will see which birds are moving and follow their path, find a spot, check for gators (no really) and hope they keep the same routines. They usually do. It’s a unique place to shoot. Everything changes over the season. At some point the nests are covered in leaves and the Spanish Moss grows. Soon Egrets, Anhinga, and others should build here (there are some islands also). Not a huge lake, but big enough.
