The Green Herons prefer to nest in thick brush and heavy trees, similar to the Yellow-crowns. These images were taken as the birds came out of the heavy bushes overlooking some water.
There had been a nest close to the water, and in a more open location but I just couldn’t find it again.
Both birds below adults but sometimes it can be hard to tell. These little herons mature very fast.

Herons loves dark green bushy trees…but after nesting all the leaves become white around the nest 😁
Oh yeah LOL. A stones throw from where these images were taken are over a thousand bigger birds nesting. An yes it’s white, and loud.
Even the poop is white, which makes leaves white 😁
This is great to see. We have herons at a lake near us but it’s impossible to get anywhere nearish to see.
They can be skittish. We have rookeries with numbers from a few birds to 1,000+. They don’t hide as much in the southern US as other places.
I find these Green Herons to be extremely hard to find – their coloring fits their preferred habitat perfectly and their incredible ability to present a thin profile when they don’t want to be disturbed is eerie.
Like a Bittern, invisible when they want to be.
Fun shots, glad you had the opportunity!
