The other day we managed to get to a large marsh in time to see a group of about 15 White Pelicans. It was cold, and we didn’t rush to get out the door so we missed any feeding / fishing.
These big birds will winter here for a few months. Some may continue south but we have the open marshes that can feed and shelter them all winter so many stay.
If you have never seen a White Pelican, well they are huge. Body weight can range between 7.7 and 30 lb. (3.5 and 13.6 kg), wing span 10 feet (3.4 meters).
At this size they do need a small runway to help them get airborne.
Nice! They don’t seem to mind the (relative) cold. How nice to see some year round 😊
3.4m is quite a wing span! Didn’t know they were that big.
The only wingspan larger in North (maybe South) America is the California Condor. And it’s wings are longer by about a thumb length LOL.
