These are not the biggest Swans, but a 5 foot wind span is still a decent size. However that wing span still needs the bird to run along over the surface of the water in order to take flight.
These are not quiet birds either. They have a high pitched whistling call, not deep like other swans.
The flocks should be around Bear Island for a few months, than start their migration north again. These flocks have the furthest distance to travel back to their breeding grounds. Not only do they come the furthest south, their nests are the furthest north of any Tundra Swans.

The Tundra’s gave a show the other morning. It’s a spot to photo them that I haven’t been to for around 3 years. In winter they migrate here, the furthest they could do. Most times they stay deep in hidden marshes so a 1 1/2 hour trip is dumb luck when you get there. 🥹.
