In the rotunda of the Gibbs Museum I spotted a familiar face down one of the wings. Jill Hooper, a self portrait, in a style that she is known for.
The last time I saw this painting it was hanging as an exhibit in one of the old Charleston manors, in an unfinished room with several other works. Prior to that it hung in London’s National Portrait Gallery.
This is a recent acquisition. The artist lives in Charleston and is now hanging here and several museums in Europe.

I obviously like her work 😆.
Might just be me, Ted, but could you have zoomed in a bit more for a second image to show more of the portrait? not familiar with the artist. Just asking…….
I did and didn’t like it LOL. In my mind I wanted to show her work in a museum, and not really the painting.
I looked her up, Ted, and I have to say, I really like her style and her paintings too.
The works she had hanging in an old, un renovated house was striking. Many small ones sitting around a 250+ year old fireplace, etc. The exhibit was a one off, but perfect for a one time show with her style.
I like it a lot !
Multiple people have commented on her, I need to dif out some of her work from the old exhibit.
