This rural rice plantation belonged to the same family from 1696 to 1971. Hampton Plantation, Santee Delta, South Carolina.
Wow. What a legacy. Do you know what became of the owners? Or who has taken such good care of it since then?
The last owner, same family through the Indian Wars, Revolution, Civil, etc. was Archibald Rutledge the poet laureate who sold it to South Carolina to be a rural park. Rutledge family was in the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence. During and right after the revolution the Marquis de Layfayette, George Washington, Francis Marion (swamp fox general) all stayed here, several battles were nearby. We took a flat bottom boat up the delta to get here. A beautiful place.

Oh yeah, another thing I love is everything is original, no restoration just basic maintenance. The house was built with Black Cypress from the swamps. Insects don’t eat it and it doesn’t burn. As you know…I love history 😆
