Bear Island, South Carolina, almost the end of the road.
Drive past the causeway to the island and you will get to the Bennett’s Point shrimp boats. After that it’s the Atlantic, end of the road.
Bear Island has always been empty. A few rice fields and before that Native American hunting areas. If you go there have a reliable car, and don’t spend the night.
Another photograph here from my initial work with the ON1 editor. I tried several types of masking, and the ‘effects’ module which is a big part of ON1. I didn’t use any of them. The basic development sliders did everything as expected, and the same results as Lightroom.

I just finished recording my video for the masking in Effect Ted, but seems you didn’t need it for this. So why is it called Bears Island if nothing lives on it.
No clue. Plenty of wildlife, but no bears…within 300 miles at least.
Interesting observation, Ted. It’s also a nice reminder that most of the heavy lifting still happens during the basic RAW development. The masks and effects are useful when needed, but a solid editor with good fundamental tools often gets you surprisingly far. It reminds me a bit of the darkroom philosophy: first develop the negative properly, then decide whether anything else is really necessary.
When I first decided to give ON1 a second look I wrote down a long list of everything I did, as I did it, in multiple images. The majority of things are basics. Any editor would do these, it turns out the real issue on these functions is speed and just how smooth they work. If anything I will have a decent knowledge of a second editor (that is much less expense).
