The bird flew right past me. I should have had a dozen good shots. However… the sun did me in.
One thing you can’t completely compensate for is the bright glare of the southern sun.

Lovely in-flight shots. I know what you mean about the bright sunshine – I often find myself post-processing my full-sun photos of white birds by reducing the exposure of the “highlights” and “whites”, increasing the exposure of the “shadows” by almost the full extent of their sliders, and then adding extra sharpness to compensate for the reduced contrast. Hulluva way to “take photos”!
