Whenever I want to get  detailed B&W work I move over to DxO Silver Efex. The software has been around since 1995, had multiple owners, and it’s still the monochrome editor most ‘art photographers’ turn to.

Unlike just about any image editing software it was never built to be a RAW file editor. It’s a plug-in, unless you first convert the file to a tiff format.

I know a fine art photographer who can literally spend days inside the system before sending something to a gallery !!!

The image below was created with Lightroom, Topaz, and Silver Efex.

The newest version has added some masking features, but cropping, formatting and other edits are not included. If you only worked in monochrome any basic editor like FastStone would be a perfect fit.

    1. The first place that I always recommend is old Magnolia Cemetery. It’s on the edge of town, when driving the exact opposite direction from all the usual places. Most people wander around the tip of town, White Gardens by the ocean. It’s not far, on the edge of an industrial port of town. One of three famous gothic cemeteries in the US.

The old mansions are great, my favorite of the Aiken-Rhett house. Nothing like any of the others. This one is in a preserved state, not really a ruin but you see the real building. Also the Manigault house is a block away, here a spectacular renovated to its original splendor location.

Flowers, outside town to the plantations. Middleton and Magnolia.

As I think of more I’ll add to this reply 😁😁

  1. They both were charming in different ways. Seeing them both on the same day juxtaposed preserved vs. restored vividly.
May do bus tour today because of the heat.
I appreciate any suggestion. Ate at Bier Garden and Saltwater Cowboy.
    Both excellent.
