I still can’t find who penned that description first, but it certainly fits. And it’s quoted often.

Pick a spot to stand, then look in all directions.

Besides being a geographic location, a wildlife haven, it is also a very creative joint effort to protect over 320,000 acres, to keep it wild.

The ACE Basin ‘Characterization Study’ is a joint effort between the SCDNR (South Carolina Dept. Of Natural Resources) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coastal Services Center (NOAA CSC), with contributions from numerous other agencies, legal trusts, and private land ownership. Just about every thing that can be at odds with each other.

Through organizations and trusts the huge properties are joined to protect this area. It would take a book to explain how it’s organized and many other places have studied how it was done…in spite of itself.

    1. It was very complicated to put together, included creative tax advantages too. Ted Turner and Jane Fonda owned a ‘untouched’ barrier island that was included, Also the Yawkey family (industrialist and owners of Boston Red Sox baseball team added a huge trust of money and islands). This land in the photo was owned by the Donnelly family (printing, Tele Co. Yellow Pages, etc.) The structure worked but no other state has been able to duplicate it.
