Santee Delta, Monochrome Monday

The **Santee Delta** is a significant ecological and historical region in South Carolina, known for its rich biodiversity and the legacy of rice cultivation supported by enslaved labor. It is part of the Carolinian South Atlantic UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and features important wildlife management areas and historical sites.

Some of the last ‘Class A’ wilderness arears in the US are in this delta.

Below was taken on cool wet morning on the South Santee river tracing the routes of the boats heading to Hampton Plantation (which also stands the same as centuries ago).

Night Time Moon Flower

Late evening actually.

Its gotten cooler at night so this years flowers are coming to an end. Been a great season though, and the vines still have plenty of buds so they are not quite ready to quit.

Yellowlegs (Lesser)

One of those small birds, always along the edge of the marshes or ponds, that get ignored. They’re actually quite pretty and have a distinct whistling sound when they fly off. Which they usually do.

The Greater Yellowlegs has a very long beak, so my guess is this is a Lesser Yellowlegs.  I think a person would need one in each hand to tell the difference. Good luck with that.

Fall Means Tall Grass And Reeds

You would never know there is a marsh between us.

The wooden gate of the trunk is about the only thing that points out anything but grass is there.

If you can believe it, there are dikes down the road in Bear Island that are at least twice as tall. Much taller than we are.

Middleton Plantation Fritillary

A random shot while at Middleton.

If there is any chance of photographing a butterfly it will be at one of the local plantations. They have gardens that have existed for hundreds of years. Something is in bloom there somewhere.

Old 35 mm Film – Kodachrome 25

Disclaimer… this was shot with a mirrorless camera, not film.

I use an editing software from DxO named Filmpack. One of the key functions is a library of film simulations. There must be 300 primary filters. They are fairly accurate, at least from what I can tell.

Rather than try to have old film look to my photographs I tend to modify a film look and save it as a starting point for standard editing.

However below I just did a regular Filmpack simulation. The photo seemed to lend itself to one.

I just published this for any old film shooters to view. There are still a few of us around, and it’s popular again… though I can’t imagine why.

A Local, Alligator

Nothing dramatic here, but a typical scene out in a marsh.

I was standing on a dike road in the ACE Basin searching for birds when I shot this. The water is high, and not going down any time soon. Birds can’t easily feed in a big marsh with high water. Actually tonight we should be getting our highest tide of the year.

The Alligators save the day. Fun to photograph and plenty to find.

Best viewed large.
