The nice thing about living in the Lowcountry, you can’t help but have thousands of photographs still to be published.
One day out shooting you have more opportunities than a month / year than other places.

If you are not fully ready a Great Egret can be in the air, and gone, faster than you would think. This was one of those times.
I knew he was there since I was waiting for him to reach out for a fish. I waited, and waited. So of course he did get one the minute I lowered my lens.
If you look close he has it in his bill, but it’s real small.
Pretty wing span here.

There’s a dirt road we take heading out to a big marsh that at one point makes a turn out of a forest and crosses a small dike into another woodland.
There is a swamp on the left, open marsh and tall grass on the right. Very pretty and often something is in the air, a tree, or even sprawled across the road. You always need to be ready to exit the car for the shot.
Below was an Egret on the left, over swamp.

I don’t know how, or why, I spotted this new born. I would guess the vines were a good 10 – 11 feet high and very thick. Maybe I noticed movement.
The little lizard was about an inch long. For perspective you can compare him to the orange Trumpet flower. These images were cropped quite a bit.
Below you can see the little guy might fit inside the flower 😆.
So… I read this on the internet, it must be true.
Female; dorsal fin pattern down her back. Small dewlap.
Male; no dorsal fin pattern down his back. Large dewlap.
One of life’s great mysteries solved.
Birds pick, probably more than anything else.
A photograph of a picking bird just doesn’t work.
However, an exception can be made for a big Great Egret with long flowing feathers.

We have big Trumpet vines growing out back. We have both native and non-native. The native are much smaller though. I don’t know what type the other vines are, but at this point they have been growing in the Lowcountry for a long time and we see them out in the swamps.
These vines grow dense and if you stop and just look around for a moment you can see a whole tiny world in there. I don’t think I could het in the tangles with a long macro lens but a telephoto seem OK for what I want.
The first thing that comes to mind here is an ant. And we have plenty of them, from little red ones to the nasty Fire Ants. I’m not calling this by any name because the insect world has just too many species.
I wonder if there’s something like Merlin, but for insects.
