We were witness to one of natures greatest shows, up close and personal. Coordinated Brown Pelicans feeding.
Catching this one series pushed me, and the gear, but I did not want to miss the spectacle. I apologize in advance for the size and number of photographs, however each image documents the amazing precision these birds have.
Above two adults start to hover and line up their attack on a school of fish below.

A Pelican will dive and hit the water at high speed, which could do some serious damage. However just at impact they turn their head at an angle and the huge bill slices into the water.
We witnessed (and photographed) numerous dives like this and the success rate was pretty good.
Above the birds were just hitting the surface, the splash and sound even louder than I would have thought.
I hope to have a few more series like this, displaying different techniques and the challenges these Pelican face, even after a catch.
Wow! It’s like a ballet:)
At a fast speed LOL. We see them fish often but getting a spot like this, with a flock of Pelicans doesn’t happen. This is a rare photo op and I took advantage as much as possible… it’s work getting this stuff LOL.
Believe me, I know. Good catch!
Terrific series, Ted! Quite the show!
I was like a little kid. Really unusual opportunity…I’m a happy camper 🙂
Wow!
A great experience.
Superb action shots, Ted! Their dives are amazing to see!
When we catch the tide right (now you too) they continuously dive.
Donna, check your boots in the AM. You’re not in Kansas anymore… https://tpjphoto.net/2020/01/05/a-scorpion-surprise/
