The Pelicans are large and pushy, but the Egrets can be Pirates too. They just charm the shrimp boat crew with their good looks.

Above a crew member is cleaning part of the catch, the Egrets are right there to help. More interesting is the crew don’t really chase off the white birds.

Egrets are smart too. Birds perch and wait just a little bit away from the cleaning stations.

Just like fishing out in the swamps, very patient. They will get their fair share.

  1. I love this, 2 years ago we were down on the coast and came across a boat dock where they were cleaning fish. So nice that the share all the scrap meat with the birds sitting there so patiently waiting for a bite.

    1. Thank you. Shrimp nets are designed to allow other fish places to escape. Doesn’t always happen though. Also, I can’t figure out why, some shrimp caught just can’t be sold. So, push them down chutes in the stern and feed the locals.

Oh, and sometimes Dolphin follow the boats in too.

    2. Magnificent. What is considered to be one of the best places to view dolphin and their hunting techniques is near me. A hike, hot, and awe inspiring if you time it right.

If you have not seen the articles here, search for ‘dolphin’. One of the only places in the world to see them hunt as a group and actually catch the fish up on shore is here. We have documented many of the hunts. Amazing to see them come up, within meters of you, and strand schools of fish. They make eye contact with us all the time.
