I’m guessing he hasn’t figured out his flight plan yet.
Great Blues learn the best path in and out of the nests, and stick with it. I’ve seen a Heron miss the path when returning and do a complete circle of the rookery so he can start from the beginning. That’s how important it is. A plan works for photographers too if you visit the rookery often enough.

I don’t think this is the best route. Even without the leaves that will soon be there flying between branches is waiting for an accident.
