This is a Black-crowned Night Heron, probably hatched this spring. They have great camouflage when young, however in a year you wouldn’t think it was the same bird.

This was one those peekaboo shots taken through a hole in the foliage. Around here that usually includes the flowing Spanish Moss. Timing is key to catch an opening as the breeze sways the Moss.

  1. Know exactly the feeling, waiting for the wind to give me a clear shot at whatever target I have to be after. You are right, the juvis are rather dull compared to their adult plumage.
