This is a large stately Mausoleum that sits on the edge of the old section in Magnolia Cemetery. Its quiet impressive and unusual even for here.
What I did not know, this is one of the few old mausoleums that have people interned within. I assume they all did. Most that we all see are actually monuments to people or family buried elsewhere.
I have photographed the Simmons mausoleum multiple times, from various angles. The images never fail to be interesting.

Interesting, did not know that some of them were simply monuments. Now curious to go check out the ones in our old cemeteries and see if that holds true for them.
That was a new factoid for me too 😳. There are four cemeteries in the US that are considered to be ‘famous’, renowned so to speak for their Victorian/Gothic designs. They are; Greenwood in Brooklyn NY, the group of St. Louis in New Orleans, Bonaventure in Savannah, and Magnolia in Charleston. All kinds of books are available, and fascinating.

😁😁, thank you. I can wander around the old cemetery area of Charleston and feel like there’s always something new to see. The northern end of town was once thought to be ‘far in the country’ so it became dotted with cemeteries.
I love old cemeteries. They are peaceful and quiet places, and I find them very interesting too.
