Found On A Walk.

This old stone has no date of birth, or death. I believe his last name was Furgurson. He was probably an enlisted man, his name is not found on any roster of officers.

The Lucas Battery was a heavy artillery unit. They started out as cavalry, but they didn’t have, or were given, any horses. Instead they got big cannons. I bet that went over well.

They were in and around Charleston, SC, for two years (1863-1864) during the siege of the city and the various engagements until being sent to North Carolina in March of 1865.

After the move to North Carolina I don’t find too many details of the battery. They probably would have been part of the surrender of Gen. Johnstons armies of Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida to the unions Gen. Sherman during the march through the south of federal forces.

I am always amazed at the amount of information that you might find through archives on-line. I started out with only the information on this head stone. When living up north I never found old cemeteries like this so I have no idea if I would have been able to dig this deep up there. I will say local history seems to be much more important in the south, or they can really hold a grudge.

The grave site was found in Soldiers Ground, Umbra Plantation / Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina.
