Another item from the art collection at the Hermitage House.
It’s also another item I have little information on. I have various pamphlets and looked through the permanent collections on line with nothing referencing this piece. There were others in a series from Ancient Greece. The tapestry here looked part of it so…

Nice !
This small private museum had treasures covering every inch of the house. Free admission too. I had never heard of it until we stumbled on it, but turns out it is very well thought of. There were several ancient carvings being unboxed while we watched.
A place worth going back to, Ted. I could spend hours in spots like that, especially when it involves deep history and objects from that era. Great find you’ve got there!
It’s about a days drive, but I think if I’m going north a side trip would be great. I would know better what to look for, ask questions, etc.
On a full day’s drive I can go from the coast to the very opposite end of Belgium and back again – all in one day. So for us, that counts as “far” and definitely not an everyday thing.
Have a great evening, Ted!
A photographer friend, from Germany, reminds me how big the country is when talk about the differences between my original home up north to here. To my wife’s old home we would drive maybe 5 days. That’s why the US has so many different types of people (and don’t always get along). We could easily be 10-15 different countries 🤣🤣🤣.
I grabbed a screenshot from your first photo, and asked Google Lens about it. GL thought the carved horse was actually part of the tapestry, and went off in that strange direction.
Then I asked ChatGPT to identify the “carved horse”. It did a much more thorough job… but concluded that the horse was probably Chinese Tang Dynesty in origin, due to the narrow and elongated head, the strong bulky body, the carved folds in the saddle blanket, the presentation of the mane as a stylized coating of smooth hair. It also said the harness decorations were typical of Tang Dynasty tomb horses.
So interesting!
That’s Great ! Thanks. This small museum, by the Newport docks was started by a family in their summer house. Now that house is a respected museum. It’s a treasure.
