Out in the wet and raw, ran holiday errands and then went exploring local history. This is something that bit me early when we moved here, met a few historians, and went right down the rabbit hole.

An easy stop for us. Biggins was an Anglican church in the St. Johns parish established around 1706. Which at the time was remote spot in the British colonies. The church was built in 1711 for plantation owners in the back woods and swamps.

It was also a place that about 65 years later had a good number of plantation people revolting against British rule. Prior to declaring independence many founders of the US were in and around this area and Boston.

The church was occupied by the British Army at one point and finally burned in 1781 when the British retreated from the area.

Go forward to the 1860’s, the repaired church was damaged during the Civil War and never reopened. An Anglican chapel down the river became the parish for a while.

Unfortunately these ruins, and most others here, are now behind wrought iron fences. Around 8 years ago people began to lose respect for places like this, and fences were quickly built / reinforced to protect them. I’ll stop here…
