I’ve wondered if I should have cropped this photograph. Looking close the birds are clear and have many different looks about them.
Some birds, on the left, are paying attention to me, some eating. On the right the light shows their long beaks with the blood red color it gets at times.

I really like the wide shot. That bright red bill color indicates mating readiness, I think.
I was thinking the same thing. If they are getting ready for breeding it will be after a trip down to mid Florida. The only time I’ve seen them nest here is mid summer. They take over Night Herons rookery after the Yellow-crowns fledge.
