I need to assume I was already focused, and shooting, when the Snowy Egret suddenly took off.
When I’m in a rookery I usually pick out a few birds to shoot early on. Quick shots to be sure of light, the usual. You can’t use Bird Tracking here. Everything is a bird!

In a rookery you get plenty of opportunities for this. Birds are in constant motion. I spent the morning in one that must have close to 2,000 bigger swamp birds. Sounds almost impossible until we do the math ourselves. For every nest on the outside of a tree line there are 2-3 inside the trees. We have tried to photograph the volume and size, but never comes out any good.

The vast amount of birds, some in your face, are always moving. A (semi) tropical rookery has thousands of birds. So just keep shooting LOL. Though I saw some little children nearby today and they were yelling and holding their nose and ears. So maybe holding the button down is a little bit of work…

Really nice Ted. And who can NOT keep photographing when the opportunity presents itself. Curious, if you have tried some slow shutter and panning to see what kinds of artsy photos you might come up with. Just saying…….
Panning doesn’t work here, lol. Tried it before. The actual flight times are minimal, not like an open marsh. These birds can get from the nest, over the water, to the wood line in maybe 3 seconds. Everything is close, and way too crowded. Yesterday we tried an uneducated count of birds. About two thousand and we quit. Many birds, right on top of each other.
