The other day we took a flat boat around the Santee Delta through the rivers, marshes, and old rice fields that still exist. We’ve taken a ride like this before and it’s an amazing trip through the largest river delta on the east coast. Part of the trip was along a class 1 wilderness area and in a large Wildlife Management Area.
The area is part of the 120,000 acre delta region and in the once ‘Rice Kingdom’ of the Lowcountry plantation system.
The route was using both the Santee rivers, and better yet, slip through creeks and canals that are not mapped. Our friend Chris is a well respected conservation activist, owns the guide/tour company Coastal Expeditions and had just taken this route a few weeks ago. He knew all the shortcuts.

A few years ago we had all done this type of trip and stopped at the old Hampton Plantation building. We did the same stop this time. The boat is custom made for marshes and can be pushed right up on the marsh river banks easily.
The environment here is a combination of old forest hard woods, marsh Cypress and Tupelo, and of course the old dike system of golden rice that was the reason for the plantation system of the Lowcountry.
Ellen kept her long lens (OM 100-400 II) on for wildlife, I spent most of the time with the mid-sized OM 12-100. Between the two of us we should have a nice series of photographs.

By the description of the boat, you two didn’t have to do a a Bogart scene of the African Queen pulling the boat through the marshes. Nice trip.
No, but we have done that in the past 🤣. Depending on the location Chris has several boats he can use. My wife went out one morning to a place where they used ropes to climb in/out of the forest lol.
That sounds like a fascinating boat trip, it is something I would love to do.
We took a route to an old plantation that was one that would have been used in the 1800’s to access the home. It’s very rural and the rivers were the highways. Lots of US history here. Our first president, British chasing leaders of the revolution hiding here…just very cool 😁.
