Pvt John Fickling – 3rd National CSA Flag

This started out looking for information on Pvt John J Fickling but ended with the flag, which was quiet colorful on the dull day.

Pvt. Fickling may have been part of Fickling’s Artillery. There were all kinds of militia and volunteer groups. The headstone is a standard replacement issue. The soldier was buried here long after the war. The headstone was not in the military burial section, this was a family plot.

Next; the colorful flag. The CSA (Confederate States Of America) existed for 5 years. Settling on state and country flags was an issue from the start. This is the third National Flag Flag, CSA.

They decided on this flag in 1865, three weeks later the war was over and the country effectively gone.
