Night Time Moon Flower

As Ellen said this morning, “the gift that just keeps giving”.

This morning was the first time in months we had no Moon Flowers out back. I walked all around, even checked behind the pine it’s been climbing.

The good news is we have gotten warmer again and there are a few buds scattered around. I’ve shot so many flowers that lately I didn’t bother. I’ll check tonight/tomorrow though. Most likely the last (I’ve said that before though).

The **Santee Delta** is a significant ecological and historical region in South Carolina, known for its rich biodiversity and the legacy of rice cultivation supported by enslaved labor. It is part of the Carolinian South Atlantic UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and features important wildlife management areas and historical sites.

Some of the last ‘Class A’ wilderness arears in the US are in this delta.

Below was taken on cool wet morning on the South Santee river tracing the routes of the boats heading to Hampton Plantation (which also stands the same as centuries ago).

Late evening actually.

Its gotten cooler at night so this years flowers are coming to an end. Been a great season though, and the vines still have plenty of buds so they are not quite ready to quit.

Nothing dramatic here, but a typical scene out in a marsh.

I was standing on a dike road in the ACE Basin searching for birds when I shot this. The water is high, and not going down any time soon. Birds can’t easily feed in a big marsh with high water. Actually tonight we should be getting our highest tide of the year.

The Alligators save the day. Fun to photograph and plenty to find.

Fall Is Here

This one of those things that always reminds me of fall. A Milkweed seed pod, bursting with little ‘parachutes’.

I don’t think this is the variation native to South Carolina. We had some native Milkweed behind our house, it didn’t look like this. Of course the Monarch Butterfly’s made short work of our plants.

This plant was photographed on the Middleton Plantation property. There are huge formal gardens there, I don’t think having only native plants is part of their plan.

Sandle Binder Middleton Plantation

I don’t know how long this statue has been at the old plantation, however in 1865 it was buried to prevent it from being damaged when the Federal troops burned the main buildings.

Snowy Egret Tree – B&W

For a while I would see a scene like this and know I couldn’t get good exposure. What I did was skip the shot. Now I look for them, a perfect time for a B&W silhouette.
