Looking over at another marsh dike.
The fore ground is actually water covered in thick Duck Weed. The close plants are tall grass. In most places much taller than a person. Here it was about 6 feet tall.
The dikes here are not very far apart in this marsh area. Most were first dug by hand using enslaved labor a few hundred years ago. No telling now why they were created like this.

The Lowcountry is made up of marshlands, cuts, and canals that date back to the 1700’s and rice plantations. Enslaved labor dug and maintained thousands of miles water ways, the dikes and trunk systems still remain in use today.

A tiny plant that has huge vines, that never seem to stop growing.
Once you smell a full vine you never forget it. What you never see are the tiny blossoms.
Along the bottom of the high vines single tiny flowers hang low. I keep thinking there must be a photograph in there somewhere. So, when ever I spot one swaying by itself I take a shot.
So far this is it…but I know there’s a photograph in there.

It’s been a while since I’ve published one of these excited Snowy Egrets.

This was one of the most unique flower buds I’d ever photographed.
I stumbled on the original image taken in a swamp last July. Immediately I had a ‘what was I thinking’ moment. This should have been done in B&W.
I opened the original file in DxO Silver Efex from Lightroom. Below is the result.

Whenever I want to get detailed B&W work I move over to DxO Silver Efex. The software has been around since 1995, had multiple owners, and it’s still the monochrome editor most ‘art photographers’ turn to.
Unlike just about any image editing software it was never built to be a RAW file editor. It’s a plug-in, unless you first convert the file to a tiff format.
I know a fine art photographer who can literally spend days inside the system before sending something to a gallery !!!
The image below was created with Lightroom, Topaz, and Silver Efex.
The newest version has added some masking features, but cropping, formatting and other edits are not included. If you only worked in monochrome any basic editor like FastStone would be a perfect fit.
I don’t think I’ve really paid much attention to the buds of a flower. There may be a few larger Hibiscus in the swamp. None look anything like the Moon Flower though.
The other evening as it turned dark I used the flash to see what different types of images I could get. No color gels or other attachments, just light against the bud, with as little as possible in the background.
