Fire Ants !!!

Moving to South Carolina? You won’t find this in the brochure.

Fire Ants. From Brazil, via the port of Mobile, Alabama. Once you have them on your property it’s an ongoing battle. We can’t poison them, that would kill everything. Best you can do is control where they are.

Below the ants that live in the arbors. You absolutely cannot climb in there looking to get a better angle on an Anole photograph. These ants are evil.

If you step on an ant mound and not notice it, well they swarm. They don’t bite…until they reach some critical mass. At some signal they all attack at the same time. If lucky you can pull off your shoes and socks and get rid of them. If not… it’s your call what goes next 🤣😂.

B&W Anole Hiding On A Stalk

The Anole, all sizes, have been moving around in all the bushes, plants, or even trees when it’s cooler. Of course they could say the same thing about me.

This mid sized Anole was on a thicker dry plant. These plants have been favorites of the lizards so it’s one of the first places we look. They blend in so well looking at a plant means checking each side.

This photograph was finished using a combination of ON1 and DxO Silver Efex. The integration functions of ON1 have been repaired as of the last update.

We have a lens that doesn’t really fit into anything we do. Size, weight, and easy traveling was the whole idea. Ellen’s travel lately really has no time for photography, me I’ve become a no travel person.

Still, a miniature zoom is fun. While the OM-1 may be OM Systems flagship wildlife camera by us old DSLR Canon users the body fits in one hand. It’s small.

The OM 14-42 is a pancake lens, yet shoots a 24-84 mm EFOV. That offers lot of options from a quick landscape to discreet street photography.

Below are a few random images taken on a rainy day, for fun and to see what I can do on the fly.

The development was done in ON1 Photo RAW. I ran the last update, I own the software so why not. Where Lightroom can get sluggish (and frustrating) ON1 is actually fast.

Below an OM 14-42 EZ pancake lens. I’m guessing this is still in production by OM, it was an old Olympus kit lens I think. The lens is said to be subject to issues since the focus is a small motorized wire system. This used lens works just fine.

Morning Glory

The rumor here was all of last years Morning Glories were not coming back. Our resident expert (there are two of us and it’s obviously not me) has always grown them no matter what climate we lived in. While there may be fewer this year the colors are amazing.

Best viewed large.

Who knew… Moon Flowers are a member of the Morning Glory family. She did it again 😊.

Tiny New Hatch Anole

He was crawling along a Moon Flower vine. When this small movement is the only way you can spot them. How small ? Maybe a little more than 1/2 inch, 1.2 cm. That’s tiny.

Below is a flower that was in the same general space for perspective. I keep hoping g I’m going to find a small one inside a blooming flower.

Folding Moon Flowers

By now, with weeks of watching and photographing these plants, I can tell how these blooms close each morning.

First the dew, or rain, touches the flowers petals and after just a short time each drop makes the surface most transparent. You can most see through the leaves of the flowers.

Finally the flower folds inward. I’m not sure if the water pulls the leaves inward or not. I then to think the think braces push together though.

The entire process is actually fast. Which makes me think I could shoot a time lapse of this. I won’t, but I could. 🤣

Morning Dew, Moon Flower Vine

Poking around the Moon Flowers early morning I find all kinds of other subjects to shoot. Most are the type of shot is just to test and see what I get. Rarely do any get published.

This is not the first time I’ve photographed the dew or rain drops. I liked this and maybe I need to pay more attention to details.

Egret Head Shot, A Little Too Close

The Great Egret was down in the cut, standing right on the base of the wooden trunk. Since I was up on the dike I had no other angle, or option but to take a head shot.

He didn’t stay there long. This is the spot where you both see each other at about the same time.
