The old plantation house was built in 1809, finally in 1850 this is what the house had become. Just last year, 2024, major repairs were made. Today the administration of Magnolia Cemetery and Soldiers Ground military cemetery is housed here.
In 1850 almost 100 acres of the plantation were transferred to a cemetery company, another unknown amount of land was added to be ‘the soldiers ground’ approximately 1862 to bury the increasing number of Charleston Confederate States troops killed during the US Civil War.

What is so amazing about this area is how many old houses, in almost any condition, are around. I know a local historian, relatively young man, who can drive down any side road and point out a house with historical details. Up north we just knocked them down and moved on.
Where I live previously there were a lot of old mill owners mansions built a couple of hundred years ago. Whilst some have been converted to apartments, many were knocked down, which was a shame as they were really beautiful and old and unique. They built modern houses on the sites with modern brick work and they all look the same with no personality.
In this area they preserve as much as possible. Also it’s just normal to keep old homes, even abandoned, standing.
And so they should 🙂
