American Oystercatcher

This bird made me work for a simple photograph. Every time I focused he dropped between rocks. A very jagged rock breaker ultimately gave me a single shot.

The long brilliant colored beak makes it easy to open oysters, their main diet…and of course the reason for their name.

These birds only live where the water is clean. One of the things environmentalists check is how many Oystercatchers are in a specific area. They are considered an important bell-weather animal.

South Herd Chincoteague Island

I’ve been trying to organize the photographs taken on Chincoteague Island. Below are new images from the south herd. I have photos from the north herd, I’m just not sure how many, and if the quality is good. The north herd was always further away.

Several times these ponies gave us nice opportunities. However the light was always facing us.

Ring-billed Gull

I haven’t used a square format for my photographs very much, but I am finding it fits more compositions than I thought. I now remember it doesn’t always work well with my page headers though.

This gull shot fit nicely with the format so it has me wondering just how important the header photo is. Certainly not important enough for me to re do the web site 😆.

Lightly Touch Down…

I should have started tracking and shooting sooner, my walk around lens is not as fast to focus as a big wildlife lens. I hesitated since I was trying to shoot a wider landscape type shot, and changed my mind at the last second.

Gulls don’t get much attention, however they are masters in the air. This was a windy day on the shore and this bird made a soft landing look easy.

Ruddy Turnstone

One of those instances when a birds name actually makes sense. A Ruddy Turnstone lives along rocky shores, feeding by turning over stones to find small prey.

Breeding up in the far north,  then moves to the coast line world wide. One of those birds that pretty much live everywhere.

Pony Marsh Life

When I think of wild horses I see open plains, dust flying, maybe mountains in the background.

Here you get scrub pines, marsh grass, pools of salt water, maybe ocean waves if you have the right angle. Nothing like you would expect.

These animals have evolved over centuries to thrive in this environment. That’s pretty amazing !

It’s The Colors

I don’t think I have ever paid much attention to industrial architecture. However we were across the bay from the Port Of Virginia docks and I noticed everything was sparkling clean, vivid colors, and many neat stacks of stuff.

Below is best viewed large.

Did I miss all the ports looking like this. I live in Charleston, a very big port city. Just down the road is Savannah, more big ports.

The light was dull, which can make for great colors. I found this really interesting and colorful.
