One of the Roseate Spoonbills that have been around the big Donnelley marshes. Most times they will be pink spots against the green banks of the far reeds/grass. However shifting tide in the salt marsh brings them over closer.
This is a young adult. The feathers are gone up top but the head has not turned that strange green tint they get.
They are so weirdā¦
One of a few Spoonbill tucked into a small swamp area in the basin. He kept looking down, paying close attention to something in the water.
I was convinced he was about to do something really interesting. Truth is this was it š.
They have favorite spots. This is one of a usual places the Spoonbills will perch over the big marshes in Donnelley WMA.
This bird was sitting there for hours. Though others were nearby so he probably felt safe.
One of those spots that can have any number of different birds sitting around. This time it was a juvenile Roseate Spoonbill. Earlier there were Egrets.
Thick trees, moss, and a water filled cut makes them comfortable and feel safe.

Out the other day we found Spoonbills. Not any large bowls (flock) but itās November and everything bird wise is slower, so this was good.
The easiest to photograph stayed around a large dead tree, even after his friends left. Below is the straggler, watching me watching him.
He did give me a nice pose.
Arriving at the old rice fields in Donnelley a group of Spoonbills spotted us and flew off towards the far side of the marsh. One stayed behind.

Even in the spoonbill world thereās one who wants to be in charge. Here he is squawking and causing trouble.
The others went about their business doing their best to ignore him.
Spoonbills donāt really make much of a sound, they cough. Itās not very intimidating.
OK, I found this a little while ago, after I published the first āSpoonbills Beingā¦ā. It certainly fits that theme.
In typical Spoonbill fashion, heās looking at me not the Alligator right next to him š.
