When we shoot the old homes most of the work is wide, full room, photographs. I do think that’s the best way to give someone an idea what these houses are like.

I also feel many of the important details are buried within the big view, almost overwhelmed.

These photographs are not wide. In fact they were taken with my ‘kit’ lens (18-135). A kit lens was looked down on for years, it’s the inexpensive one that can be bundled with a camera body.

I thought that way until I found shooting like this I always needed something longer, or shorter. Space is at a premium, and distance changes in every room.

It turns out my better lens are all staying in my bag more and more.

Found wandering the towns of South Carolina.

Being a transplant from the north part of my photography ‘down time’ is spent wandering and looking around. With a camera for that ‘new place photo’.

A closed up Pawn Shop fit that description perfect.

The treasure was an old ‘Flying V’ guitar. Instruments are always pawned for fast cash.

The ‘V’ was originally a Gibson Guitar, made for flash but the sound was good since they used all the standard Gibson pickups and electronics. For a while it became popular with blues players.

So popular this copy was created by several other guitar companies. The slight change here makes me think this is a Rhodes Guitar Company version.

Pawn Shops have always been the place to find a good instrument at a bargain (almost) price. Even Manny’s, the NYC icon for musical instruments, was flanked by Pawn Shops.

Wandering an old southern town shooting B&W and finding a Pawn is a little like Christmas for somebody like me.

Of course then I have to narrow down the shots to just 3 or 4…now it becomes work again.

On the marsh, and edge of the peninsula, around Charleston is a series of old cemeteries. Old walls line the lanes heavy with stately Live Oaks and Spanish Moss.

Receiving Tomb

There are not many buildings like this around any longer. And yet here we have two, almost in sight of each other. I have seen a few others, but they were in colder climates.

This was a temporary place to hold the remains of the recently deceased. Buildings like this were important in areas where the ground was frozen.

While out the other day this Tricolored Heron perched in a small tree along a trail. The sky was flat and I hoped it might make a good background for a silhouette shot.

It turned out there was much more detail captured with the image.

This was the first photograph of the day. I wanted a simple image to start with.

Not only did the sky, and marsh brighten in a few minutes, this Heron keep his spot for hours. I also have a few nice color ones, but they were taken hours later when I walked past leaving the trail.
