White Pelicans, Marsh Exit

I think these shots may be some of my favorite of the White Pelican.

Mosquito Creek is a large, and long, body of water on the Yawke wildlife property. Being along the Winyah Bay Estuary it draws a gazillion (technical term) migrating White Pelicans.

When we first walked the edge of the creek a large group of birds took flight heading to the other side of the water. I don’t think a better spot could have been found for these photographs.

With a wing span close to 10 feet (3 meters) you can imagine how loud a group is when taking flight as a group. Water flies everywhere.

There were enough in the flock that I could get the first shots and still back up and move to grab a wider images when the stragglers took off. White Pelicans are too big for an immediate lift off, I panned as they pushed from the left slowly gaining height.

The birds here are rarely around by humans once they arrive. This is a protected barrier island owned, and managed, in a unique arrangement. The land was ‘gifted’ to the South Carolina Dept. of Natural Resources. However, there are strings attached. The Yawke foundation provides for all the expenses. From salaries of rangers, equipment, and research grants. Each year the property is audited to ensure the conservation, privacy, and protection is following the ‘gifts’ guidelines.

You cannot access the island property without prior arrangements, and will be escorted around by a DNR ranger (who happens to be bird a bird photographer). Also there are a number of visit ‘types’. It’s like an unwritten rule you visit and attend a few general visits before being on one of the more ‘open’ trips in the field.

Pelicans, Heron, Stork

A few days ago most of the marsh residents were working the far edges and avoiding the main dike road. This is when I use my monopod. I want to shoot long, wide, and at a slower speed.

A group of White Pelicans moved back and forth along a side dike. This path took them past other birds also working the reeds there.

The first photograph had two mixing with a Great Blue Heron. While the Heron is tall the difference is obvious. The Pelicans are much bigger.

Below Pelicans swam by a young Wood Stork. The stork was a juvenile, still when an adult is the tallest bird out here. Again the size difference is clear.

White Pelicans are huge birds. If they were able to stand straight they are just about the size of a person.

Some interesting comparisons.

White Pelican Flock

The second largest bird in North America, the Condor is a shade larger. A White Pelican can be 5 1/2 feet in length (1.7 meters), a wing span of 10 feet (3 meters).

This is flock taking off is like being on a runway.

Brave (Foolish?) Pelican

I count at least four Dolphin this Pelican was trying to steal from.

A good guess is the Dolphin averaged about 450 pounds, and were 12 feet long. The Brown Pelican, maybe 7 pounds and 4.5 feet tall.

I will say the Pelican was careful and stayed away hoping a fish would squirt his way. They do, just not today.

Still it’s funny to watch him trot up close to the Dolphin.

This Pelican followed them a few feet out into the water too.

Mosquito Creek White Pelicans

Based on a map I’m assuming this flock was along Mosquito Creek, in the Yawke Wildlife Area, South Carolina.

The creek name was fairly accurate too. I rarely wear a protective face/neck gaiter. This time I was glad to have one in my pack.

Dolphin Catch, Pelican Can Just Watch

This Dolphin hunt was the closest I was to the correct angle, the entire day. You really have no idea where they will strand fish until the water swirls just before the push. Educated guess work, which was not great that day.

On this push I did get a Dolphin with his prize so no complaints.

The Pelican had worse luck than I did 🤣 .

This day I may have seen up to nine different stranding’s, and caught five on camera.
