Being On The Runway, White Pelicans

This is one of the shots that I try to capture. A Pelican flock take off. Ideal would be a very near miss, right at me. It’s probably good that angle is rare. These are big birds and a miscalculation would really hurt.

An adult is 65 inches tall (165 cm), weights 317 oz (9000 g), and their wings are 114 inches (290cm). Like an airplane.

Being large it can take them a while to get in the air, some almost skip on the water.

Brown Pelican, Passing By Low

I guess today is ‘Pelican Day’. I’ll give the Brown Pelican equal billing with the White.

These images were captured near Charleston Harbor. Where the White will frequent marshes I have only seen one Brown Pelican there.

Brown Pelicans are the smallest in North America, and probably the most acrobatic. Better personality too, my opinion.

An Itch, Pelican

Taken in a dark area in a marsh. I set my lighting on the white bird to avoid losing details. By default when doing this the background becomes under exposed.

The Pelicans Have Arrived

It’s that time of year and they have started to slip into the back marshes. It’s hard to close to these flocks. This group landed in a location that had no access… except by air.

They glide in with little noise. The final ‘splash’ down gives them away.

I much prefer wide and long shots like these to closeups. The fall reeds and pines add so much to the images.
