An Old Plantation Statue

Magnolia Plantations has many gardens, and a few ‘old’ gardens. Well, they’re all old, some are maintained like a traditional garden, but a few off the path are a little more ‘rustic’.

Scattered around are old statues. Every once in a while I still find things in the small swamp areas.

This statue is easily seen, yet typically needs some scrubbing. However, you need a boat to get close. It sits on a dry hummock in an overgrown swamp pond.

I think the ‘crust’ gives it some character.

Old Wrought Iron

On a recent morning walk we were searching for ‘small critters’ within the wet flowers, plants and an old fence that runs along through the plantings.

Looking up, rather than down in the plants I found the sun silhouetting the old iron, a stray fuzzy caterpillar, and rough painted texture.

It all seemed like it should make for an interesting, and a little different, photograph.

Waiting… Heron Chick

Hidden away in the thick Palmettos. Best viewed large.

Wildlife photographers usually can’t spend much time on the in camera composition, just the basics if lucky.

As soon as I spotted this little guy in the dark palms I walked backwards and shot as wide as my lens would allow.

Stones In The Oaks And Moss

Headstones and monuments among the old Live Oaks and Spanish Moss.

In parts of the south it’s common for everything to be under the big mossy trees. There are homes nestled in them, roads under their boughs, and as you can see cemeteries here.

The scenes make for great photographs too.

Joining Old And New

Over the last two years the Historic Charleston Foundation has opened the old Aiken-Rhett House to local artists for a short term gallery show.

A show here is difficult because you just can’t go hanging and rearranging things in the home. It has been preserved, a snap shot in time, as a study in architecture and history. Holes in the wall are frowned upon. They do a great job and it’s always interesting (challenging) to photograph.
