Top Of The Stairs

The stairs in the old house are circular like most of the era. These are just not open and free standing. What makes this so great is the view nearing the top.

Upstairs, just off the landing is always a show. You can be greeted by mirrors, heavy furniture on the walls, even old wicker chairs.

What ever you find it’s extra dramatic since the big windows shine light right in your face. Shadows and contrasts, the time of year you visit, all play into what and how you shoot.

The Details Of An Old House, Monochrome Monday

For a while I did what most photographers do when shooting historic buildings. I would find an angle, get what light I could, and shoot as wide as I could.

There is so much to see in the details of the old houses though. Now I shoot wide, then shift to capture the little things.

Homes of the wealthy had music rooms, children learned to play music. The preferred instrument of torture was a huge harp.

Enslaved Workers Living Quarters

Up above the kitchen and laundry, where fires burned all day, were the living spaces for up to 19 enslaved workers in this 1850’s property.

Below is a series of photographs taken starting with climbing the stairs and walking through the halls and rooms. The only light up there was whatever came in through the courtyard windows.

We Were All Glad To See The Sun, Turtles

It was cold and windy, however the sun was out.

We went down to walk around the local swamp rookery to see who was home. Some Herons, Hawks, and these two below.

A little sun glare on the turtles, the swinging moss didn’t help either. Still a day out in nature is a good thing.

Best viewed large.

Porch Rockers

A big plantation porch, a few rockers, and I’ll be there.

The other day while out walking I realized it’s been a long time since I sat back and enjoyed the view from this porch, Magnolia Plantation.
