We Were All Glad To See The Sun, Turtles

It was cold and windy, however the sun was out.

We went down to walk around the local swamp rookery to see who was home. Some Herons, Hawks, and these two below.

A little sun glare on the turtles, the swinging moss didn’t help either. Still a day out in nature is a good thing.

Porch Rockers

A big plantation porch, a few rockers, and I’ll be there.

The other day while out walking I realized it’s been a long time since I sat back and enjoyed the view from this porch, Magnolia Plantation.

Looking Towards The Plantation, B&W

The main house of the Magnolia Plantation is on the far side of the tree line. A gazebo backs up to a swamp pond once part of larger gardens. Look closely and you can see the large white columns of the manor house in the trees.

The swamps and marshes were never far from the main property. Unlike other plantations Magnolia never tried to change the land into a show wealth with formal gardens.

Old ‘Soldiers Ground’

Soldiers Ground; I’m not sure where the name came from. I think it was a description once and it slowly became the unofficial name. It certainly fits.

The upper end of the Charleston peninsula had a small plantation and wetlands. When the church graveyards filled the area became a place of cemeteries. The Confederate States government established the grounds on Umbra Plantation and Magnolia Cemetery for military burials during the Civil War, in 1871 the Ladies Memorial Society took possession.
