Puberty And The Stick

When Night Herons find a place they like, they ‘stick’ with it. The bird here flew from this awkward spot several times, only to return and hang on again.

After I entered the title it occurred to me Google Search might have some funny listings with this.

This young Black-crowned Night Heron is in the final stages of getting adult feathers. Not brown, not yet grey, just a bland mixture of the two.

These photos were taken when I first noticed him. Later I passed by and he was back. That’s when I made an effort to capture him at several angles. I still need to view them and see if anything different enough is there. I really liked the odd location he picked.

Egrets In A Swamp

Two photographs of Great Egrets I shot last week while in the local rookery.

The first was taken as the Egret passed by closer to the far side of the open water. It was also taken a little wide to include the greenery all around. Including some of the wider Palmetto branches I can get a ‘jungle’ look. At least that’s what I call it.

The second photo is of an adult with the bright green mating color on the lore around the eyes. This fades as soon as the spring is over.

Demanding To Be Fed, Heron

Feeding young herons can be brutal. All the chicks basically attack the adult, at the same time. It’s a fight to get food.

At this age the smallest chick may not get enough to eat. Later on, the larger juveniles are so aggressive the adults will quickly drop a fish and leave.

This time a single chick grabbed hold of the adult and looks to have gotten everything.
