Signs of life at a second hand store.

In years past whenever I traveled to the south I always noticed the Railroad tracks running through town. It was something I associated small rural towns with.
Actually the last place I lived up north had an old track over the Main Street. It was rarely used.
I can’t say there are more in small towns down south for sure, but I do know everywhere I go has one.
Personally I think the old signs and tracks do make a nice B&W image.
Main Street has been an on going theme here for a long time. It started in a few small New England towns and I have carried it through to the south.
Almost always the photographs have been a monochrome format. I find it adds character and drama to the images. Some make the subject look better, some worse, but always more interesting.
Every town has a bail bonds store front on a side street. Not sure what that says about us.
A true southern fixture is the train running right across Main Street. Here I caught one passing through town on a Sunday morning.
Main Street is interesting, but the side streets have all the character.
I have learned the best time for these shoots is a Sunday morning. No people makes it much easier to get the wide angles and perspectives I want.
Photographed in Williamsburg County, South Carolina.
All this needs is a ‘wish you were here’ slogan across the front.
Being a northern transplant I know little about the towns outside of the general Charleston area. I can safely say it is very different from where I grew up.
What is the same as up north is the aging and slow ruin of the American Down Town. That is universal. Personally I love the old towns. I try to load some gear and go out looking and learning as often as possible.
This was taken on Main Street, Manning. They wanted everyone to know where you were. I also thought the old building, from 1916, was cleverly brought into today by mixing the retail store name with the architecture.
Photographed while out exploring, shooting B&W, but here a little color.
This is one of my favorite B&W shots. It was originally published on an all Black and White web site last year.
Shot in a small rural town in South Carolina, the main focus of the image was the rough end of an old dirt road. And signs by the RR track were clear, the road ends.
And then, with perfect timing…
a small Guinea Hen walked out into the shot.
I like to think of this style as ‘rural street photography’.
A series shot of an everyday Main Street USA. The images are finished in various styles of black and white.
The photographs may seem a little stark, or harsh but they do fit the darker impression I am trying to present.
