The day was dull and dark. When I first arrived at this swamp there was no action at all.
But in short order the Great Blues started to work on their nests and the dull light proved to be better than I had thought.
This Heron was suddenly pushed along by his mate to gather more sticks. We found a good spot and she kept sending him out for more.
Worked out well.
Taken the other day when none of the locals seemed to be happy with their place in the marsh.
Egrets, and Herons, moved back and forth the length of the rice fields.
As long as the birds didn’t move off to the far side I had a chance of getting shots like these. Heading back over the reeds is a mile from any trails, or solid ground.
First shot of the day and it was two nondescript ducks.
I can never ID any when they are these colors and markings. Too many species are similar. So this is the best I have.
I cannot pass up taking this shot, no matter how many times I have done it before.

One that should be viewed large. The reflections between Alligator and water are almost transparent.
I published this because it’s actually a common photograph we capture. When the water is clear and the light soft it’s really impressive. But I don’t think I have done a dark B&W before.
A Carolina Chickadee dropped from a tree and sat down a few inches from the swamp surface.
They don’t stay still for long, but this one gave me time for a full series of photographs.
It was pretty clear he knew I was there too.
Both sides of this trail are swamp and thick with branches and scrub trees. A nice place to walk between open areas but decent shots of small critters along here are rare.
Besides, Hawks love to sit up above and wait for a little guy to make a mistake.
At first I was ready to catch the crash, all focused and waiting.
A slight shift, and all was good.
