A Great Blue Greeting

Unlike other birds the Great Blue Heron will greet a returning mate, almost with affection. You can hear their calls from a long way off.

The birds communicate, touch each other, and settle down together.

Eventually the original Heron will leave, off to search for food. The remaining bird guards the nest.

Herons Guarding A Nesting Spot

Another move to drive off the intruding Great Egrets from the rookery.

This time the Egret dropped down to a lower branch rather than fly off. The Great Blues let him stay… big mistake.

It should take less than a day for the Egrets to establish their own claim on this Cypress Tree.

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church

This had been an impossible place to photograph. I have only seen it open for Sunday services. However…

A small sign on the steps warning ‘watch your step’ was the signal. The doors were open, the only two people I saw left almost as we entered.

St. Michael's Episcopal Church
St. Michael’s Episcopal Church

This is the oldest surviving church in Charleston, built in 1750 – 1760. Old notices and plaques on side walls mark Sunday Services with Pres. George Washington, Southern General Robert E. Lee, and a host of others.

Two wars, fires, hurricanes, and earthquakes have done damage, but it’s still here and full every Sunday.

We only had a short time to visit but I do have a number of photographs to be reviewed and finished. Even if this turns out to be the only image I’m happy having finally been inside with a camera.
