Loud, Chaotic, Beautiful, And A Rare Sight

Something set them off and they all took to the air at the same time. It was deafening and amazing, there was at least a thousand taking off at the same time.

What makes this even more special are the mix of birds and how not that long ago this might never have happened.

Wood Storks were endangered and almost gone, Roseate Spoonbills would stay in Central / South America, and some Egrets were hunted to almost extinction.

Yet here they were, all together in front of my camera.

I have added images to a gallery to allow large detailed viewing.

The Perfect Landing, Great Egret

A dull and damp back drop was perfect for this beautiful white bird.

I tried to follow the bird as he flew over the marsh but could not grab focus until the moment of landing.  The old dead tree was directly in front of me, a great angle.

I’ll take it, the photographs came out better than I could have hoped for.

All It Takes Is One, A Series

Just like lining up dominoes, it takes only 1 to move for all the others to follow.

The Egret and Spoonbill were doing fine, but look in the back and you see several Teal’s and Godwit’s making a run. In a flash the Egret had her wings up.

Suddenly a quiet scene becomes chaos.

The good news, I was standing there shooting it all.

A Morning View In A Marsh

This is a scene I walked up to the other morning. Peaking over the tops of the tall reeds you could see thousands of wading birds feeding. In truth I could hear them long before.

The water around here was lowered the previous day by the Dept. Natural Resources. A temporary draining of marshes helps clean out vegetation. It takes 24 hours for the large birds to start showing up.

Every species I could think of was around the area this last week.

All At Once, A Thousand Egrets

This is a photograph to be viewed as wide as possible. When you do consider that this is just what would fit in my viewfinder. On the left, on the right, an unknown number of white birds taking to the air.

Add to this ‘picture’ that it was early morning and I was alone, the only human for miles.

Sad, but some day this most likely will be gone. Please think about that the next time a politician wants to change environmental laws.

A Few White Birds

This is a pretty amazing sight. Me and a thousand Egrets. Not another human being for miles. Any sounds were drowned by a howling wind.

These Egrets were surrounded by marsh, getting much closer was not possible. Besides I really didn’t want to scare or intrude on their resting.

Spoonbills And Egrets Flocking

These photographs were taken as different groups of birds decided to move to a new corner of a marsh. Which was good for me since it was near where we were headed.

There was a lot of movement so image composition was not a consideration, or even a fleeting thought. I had a flock of large birds landing in front of me.

Of course they didn’t stay long, but I was still in sight of the next stop.

Above is a favorite here so if the water is low they will ultimately land here. It makes a nice wide shot of bird flocks and I have photographed this before.
